America's Hidden Talent Pool There are nearly 10 million blind and visually impaired adults in the United States, yet nearly 70% are unemployed. What stands between millions of able-bodied blind people and jobs? According to the American Council for the Blind, the most prohibitive forces are scarcity of appropriate training and equipment, isolation from opportunities and information, and society's misconceptions about blindness and work readiness.In April of 2009, Human Resources Magazine labeled the visually impaired population an "underestimated talent pool," noting that sight-limited members of the workforce tend to be at least as educated and technically proficient as their sighted counterparts in each respective demographic. Yet, despite their potential, blind adults are often overlooked and underemployed. | |||
| Why VMC? VMC brings these two powerful entities together by leveraging opportunities for blind performers, composers, vocalists and audio technicians in music, entertainment, and advertising industries. Answering the call of the American Council for the Blind, VMC has developed a set of services to address the three greatest obstacles to employment for America’s nearly 4 million able-bodied but out-of-work blind adults: 1) training; 2) opportunity; and 3) societal perception.  To overcome those obstacles and support the success of blind adults of all levels of talent and job readiness, VMC has created a five-step service package that includes training, networking, representation, employment, and licensing.
