| What We Do |
| |
| VMC supports over 100 blind Americans in the pursuit of and success in roles in music, entertainment and media-based industries. This is done through a five-step service package that includes training, networking, representation, employment and licensing as follows: |
| |
| 1 Training Sequence |
| |
| |
"Now I not only know how to digitally master my work, but with the training from VMC, I can produce most of it at home." |
 | Training takes place all throughout our continuum of service, as we mentor our members toward the greatest possible self-sufficiency in their professions. However, there is typically a need for an initial orientation and training that is based on the readiness of each individual member. We assess natural talent, potential talent, familiarity with the latest audio technology and performance standards, and awareness of effective practices in music, media and advertising.
We then begin coaching and training a new member in areas of need so that his/her offerings are marketable. Our training approach is highly individualized based on the needs of each member. Those who show potential for success as performing artists, voiceover specialists or composers are given coaching, as needed, in the latest industry quality standards as well as mentorship in working with production teams. We also guide performing or composing members in setting up home production systems to support their self-sufficiency as artists. Those who have potential as audio technicians are given hands-on training in our blind-friendly studios, with access to sound boards and digital programming devices. |

| 2 Networking |
| |
| |
"I no longer have to stand alone at a function waiting for a record executive to come find me. VMC makes sure I meet the right people." |
 | VMC is an association of blind music, media and advertising professionals, and we work diligently to connect performers, composers, producers, and technicians in ways that generate more career opportunities and a greater sense of belonging for our members. We build the VMC network in two ways:
Networking Events – We host networking receptions for members and industry representatives so that our members have opportunities for direct personal contact with individuals in each industry.
Intra-Organizational Matchmaking – We actively promote relationships among members whose collaborative efforts would yield better and more prosperous opportunities for all involved. |
| |
| 3 Representation |
| |
| |
"VMC has booked me for private gigs, distributed my work through Orchard, licensed my work through Paul McCartney’s company MPL and given me free studio recording time. I could not ask for more." |
 | One of our most important services is representation of talent. In providing this service, we both protect and promote our members as they seek or receive offers from industry executives. Representation of talent includes oversight of contract negotiation or licensing of artistic work; support in developing and presenting a work portfolio; branding and identifying a target market; and making an artists’ work available to the public.
A key aspect of our representation service is promotion of artists to the public. In the modern age, music promotion is done largely via the Internet, cell phones and related technologies such as Twitter. Blind artists are at a disadvantage in utilizing these technologies, so VMC’s staff provide support that offers blind artists equal access to key promotional and revenue streams in today’s market.
For artists who need studio time, VMC also offers recording and production services as well as distribution of artistic work through our website and through our relationship with commercial distribution organizations. |
| |
| 4 Employment |
| |
VMC actively pursues short- and long-term employment opportunities for its members, including full-time positions in music, media and advertising companies as well as part-time or consulting work for special projects. We also book blind talent for live performances in a variety of musical genres for events such as fundraisers, office parties, and conferences.
VMC is also associated with National Industries for the Blind (NIB), a network of over 85 agencies employing nearly 5,600 blind people each year. This association allows us to offer our members access to an extensive range of opportunities in and beyond our focus industries. |
| |
| 5 Licensing |
| |
| For our members who produce artistic work, we provide licensing services to ensure that their work is protected and that the artists are fairly paid whenever their work is used. We also use this special position to promote the use of work by blind artists in any instance in which music or other audio products are needed, such as for sonic branding (e.g., 3 chimes used for NBC), voiceovers, TV/radio advertising jingles, soundtracks, broadcast systems, and CD or MP3 compilations. | |
